TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS INCUBATIOR (TBI) PROGRAM IN IIT DELHI

 

The Technology Business Incubator (TBI) has been in active operation, in the Institute since the year 2000 (following approval of the scheme by the institute). The TBI is conceived, programmed and implemented by the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) - the industry interface unit of the Institute.

The operational parameters for the TBI has been streamlined with

  • Built up office modules equipped with Internet access facilities, telephone, electrical installations etc.

  • Shared facilities in conferencing, meeting, reception etc.

  • Business facilities like FAX, photocopying, mail handling etc.

  • Templates of basic instruments governing the incubation viz. (i) License agreement and (ii) Synergy MoU have been standardized

  • Guidelines / norms for various financial parameters e.g. Equity, Loans, space utilization charges, other considerations payable by TBI resident companies have been established

  • Funding for the bridge-capital for the start-up companies have been sourced

  • Networking with Venture companies established through MoU for early stage and further round of funding in incubatee companies satisfying the investment norms.

  • Networking with premier Management Institute and other incubator for techno-managerial support in new business formation, market studies and entrepreneurship development.

Within the existing policy guidelines of the Institute, the following categories of entrepreneurs are eligible for the incubation programme :

  • An incubator nursery programme – initiated by one or more members of academic staff, students or alumni of one the Institute or a faculty-student led company

  • A start-up company formed by one or more first generation entrepreneurs

  • R&D division of existing Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

The ventures addressing developed product/services, leveraging on technologies having homology in the Institute shall be incubated by start-up units - preferred for residency in the order listed above. The Standing Screening Committee in the Institute on pre-defined criteria appraises each incubation proposal and the business plan. Except the incubator nursery programmes where fund shortages during incubation progress are considered by the Committee to be met as loan/seed funding, other start-ups are expected to meet the fund requirements from own sources.
